The Dwarf Pygmy Puffer Fish, scientifically known as Carinotetraodon travancoricus, is a captivating and popular aquarium species. This diminutive freshwater puffer fish is renowned for its vibrant personality and unique appearance. Typically measuring just 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters in length, they are one of the smallest pufferfish species. Their bodies are often a rich, olive green with iridescent yellow to white spots, creating a striking contrast. These puffers are known for their inquisitive nature and the ability to recognize their owners. Despite their small size, they have a significant presence in a tank due to their active and curious behaviors. They are relatively hardy but require specific care to thrive in a home aquarium. Their diet, water quality, and social interactions need careful consideration, making them more suited for experienced aquarists.

Origin: The Dwarf Pygmy Puffer Fish is native to the freshwater rivers and streams of Kerala and Southern Karnataka in Southwestern India.

Temperature: The ideal water temperature for Dwarf Pygmy Puffer Fish ranges from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius (72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit).

Feeding: These puffers thrive on a varied diet including live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also occasionally accept snails, which help in wearing down their ever-growing teeth.

Water Quality: Dwarf Pygmy Puffers prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. They also require soft to moderately hard water.

Ideal Aquarium Size: A minimum of 38 liters (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Dwarf Pygmy Puffers. They need a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and a gentle filtration system to mimic their natural habitat.

Lifespan: In a well-maintained aquarium, Dwarf Pygmy Puffer Fish can live for around 4 to 5 years.

Community Tank Compatibility: They can be aggressive towards other fish, especially those with long fins. It's best to keep them with similar-sized, fast-moving fish or in a species-only tank.

Breeding: Breeding Dwarf Pygmy Puffers requires soft water, a high-quality diet, and a separate breeding tank. The female lays eggs on a flat surface, which the male fertilizes. Post fertilization, adult puffers should be removed to prevent predation on the eggs.
