Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris, commonly known as the climbing hydrangea, is a remarkable deciduous vine noted for its ability to climb walls, fences, and other structures. It features lush, heart-shaped, dark green leaves that provide a dense, leafy backdrop throughout the growing season. In early summer, this hydrangea produces striking, large white lacecap flowers that are both fragrant and attractive to pollinators. The plant’s exfoliating, reddish-brown bark adds winter interest to the garden, making it a year-round performer.

Why we like it

  • Ability to climb and cover vertical spaces, adding greenery to otherwise bare areas
  • Beautiful, fragrant white flowers that attract bees and butterflies
  • Year-round interest thanks to its exfoliating bark and robust foliage

What to know

  • Prefers partial to full shade but can tolerate morning sun with adequate moisture
  • Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil; amend with organic matter to enhance growth
  • Regular watering is crucial, especially in dry conditions and when planted against structures that may limit rain exposure
  • Flowers on old wood; prune after flowering to remove dead wood and to control size
  • Slow to establish but very long-lived and low maintenance once settled

  • White

Flowering months

  • July
