Like many mantids, the dead leaf remains mostly motionless, which is beneficial for its camouflage. The "dead leaf" waits camouflaged in its habitat for prey, which it quickly grabs with its tentacles as soon as it comes within reach. The dead leaf also stalks its prey. Depending on the mantid's habitat, ground-dwelling animals that the "dead leaf" can overpower can be considered as prey. While the aggressive females often defend themselves through their defensive posture, the males and also the nymphs fall to the ground when disturbed and remain motionless for several minutes. They bend their legs to give the impression of a leaf.

Origin: Malaysian Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo

Appearance: Dead Leaf Mantises are masterful mimics of dead leaves, with flattened bodies, serrated edges, and intricate patterns on their forewings that resemble leaf veins and blemishes. This camouflage allows them to hide effectively from predators and ambush their prey. Final excepted size 6-8cm

Habitat: In the wild, Dead Leaf Mantises are typically found in rainforests and tropical woodlands, where they inhabit shrubs and trees with leaves that closely match their appearance. They prefer warm and humid environments, making them well-suited to captivity in enclosed terrariums with appropriate temperature and humidity levels.

Temperature and Humidity: Substrate and air temperature 25-30 °C

Housing: To keep Dead Leaf Mantises as pets, a suitable terrarium with vertical space for climbing and hanging is recommended. Providing a variety of artificial or real plants with leaf-like structures will offer them hiding spots and opportunities for ambush. A substrate of coconut fiber or peat moss can help maintain the required humidity levels. These mantises are solitary creatures and should be kept individually to prevent cannibalism.

Feeding: Dead Leaf Mantises are carnivorous predators that feed on a diet of live insects. They are skilled hunters and will patiently wait for prey to come within striking distance. Suitable prey items include flies, moths, crickets, and other small insects. It's crucial to provide a varied diet and ensure that the prey is appropriately sized for the mantis.

Lifespan: The lifespan of Dead Leaf Mantises in captivity can range from 6 months to 1 year, depending on factors like temperature, humidity, and diet. Like many other mantis species, they undergo molting stages as they grow, shedding their exoskeletons to accommodate their increasing size.

Behavior and Personality: Dead Leaf Mantises are known for their patient and stealthy hunting behavior. They are not particularly aggressive towards humans but may become stressed if handled too frequently. These mantises are more enjoyable to observe in their natural habitat within the terrarium, where they showcase their remarkable leaf mimicry and hunting skills.
