The Brazilian White Knee Tarantula, Acanthoscuria geniculata, is a popular species among tarantula enthusiasts, renowned for its striking appearance and relatively docile temperament. This species is characterized by its robust size and distinctive coloration, with dark brown or black bodies contrasted by bright white stripes on its legs. It's one of the larger tarantula species, with females often reaching a leg span of up to 8 inches (20 cm). Despite its size, it's known for being more manageable than some other large species, making it a favorite among both novice and experienced keepers.

Origin:

Native to the rainforests of Brazil, the Brazilian White Knee Tarantula thrives in warm and humid environments. They are commonly found in the wild, inhabiting burrows and using their impressive size and speed to catch prey.

Temperature:

The ideal temperature range for this species is between 75-85°F (24-29°C), with a humidity level of around 70-80%. Consistent temperature and humidity are key to maintaining their health.

Housing:

A spacious terrarium with a deep substrate is essential for this burrowing species. A mix of soil and coconut fiber works well for substrate, providing both stability for burrowing and moisture retention. The enclosure should include a water dish and hiding places like hollow logs or cork bark. Due to their size, a larger enclosure is recommended to ensure adequate space.

Feeding:

The Brazilian White Knee Tarantula feeds on a variety of insects, including crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Juveniles should be fed more frequently, while adults can be fed once or twice a week. It's important to adjust the feeding schedule based on the tarantula's size and condition.

Lifespan:

In captivity, these tarantulas can live for up to 15 years, with females typically outliving males. Proper care and a stable environment contribute to a longer lifespan.

Behavior and Personality:

They are known for their relatively calm demeanor, making them a good choice for those new to tarantula keeping. However, they can be skittish and may exhibit defensive behavior when threatened. Handling should be done with care, as they can move quickly and may become stressed.
