Dryopteris atrata, commonly known as shaggy wood fern, is a deciduous fern that is native to Europe and Asia. This fern typically grows in moist, shady locations such as woodlands, stream banks, and rocky slopes. The fronds are long and tapering, with a shaggy appearance due to the long, wiry hairs on the stems and leaf undersides. The colour is a dark green, and it can grow up to 60 cm tall. The plant prefers well-draining soil and partial shade. It can also tolerate slightly alkaline soils, making it a versatile addition to gardens. The Shaggy Wood Fern is easy to care for and is a hardy plant that can tolerate frost.
