Carex flava, also known as Yellow Sedge, is a species of perennial sedge native to Europe and Asia. It is a clump-forming plant with narrow, yellow-green leaves that can grow up to 60 cm in height. In late spring to early summer, it produces flowering stems topped with light brown spikelets. This plant is commonly found in damp meadows, along riverbanks, and in wet woodlands, and it prefers moist soil.

Why we like it:

  • Yellow Sedge is a low-maintenance plant that can thrive in a variety of conditions, making it a versatile choice for gardens in Ireland.
  • It is a great choice for adding texture and interest to water features, as it can tolerate moist soil and shallow water.
  • As a native plant, Yellow Sedge also supports local wildlife, providing habitat and food sources for insects, birds, and other animals.

What to know:

  • Yellow Sedge prefers moist, well-draining soil and can tolerate partial shade to full sun.
  • It is a relatively low-growing plant, with a maximum height of around 60 cm.
  • This plant is easy to propagate through division in early spring or autumn.
  • Yellow Sedge does not require frequent fertilization and can be kept tidy with regular trimming.
  • It is a great choice for erosion control, as its fibrous root system helps to stabilize soil.

Height and Spread:

  • Height: up to 60 cm
  • Spread: up to 60 cm
