Alcea rosea Double Yellow is a stunning plant that adds a pop of sunshine to any garden with its bright, yellow double flowers that bloom in the summer. Also known as the Hollyhock, this plant is a favourite in Irish gardens due to its tall and imposing structure that stands out from the crowd. The Hollyhock has been cultivated for centuries and is said to have been grown in medieval gardens. Its towering spikes of flowers can reach heights of up to 2m, making it perfect for the back of borders or to create a statement in a cottage garden.

Why we like it:

  • Adds a burst of vibrant yellow to any garden.
  • Tall and imposing structure adds a dramatic effect to garden borders.
  • Attracts bees and butterflies to the garden.

What to know:

  • Hollyhocks prefer full sun and well-drained soil.
  • They can be prone to rust and other fungal diseases, so proper care and maintenance are necessary.
  • Deadheading spent blooms can encourage the plant to produce more flowers.

Height and Spread:

  • When fully grown, Alcea rosea Double Yellow can reach a height of up to 2m and a spread of up to 60cm.
