The Orange Baboon Tarantula, also known as Pterinochilus murinus, is a well-known species in the tarantula hobby for its striking appearance and challenging temperament. This species is often characterized by a bright orange or rusty coloration on its body, with a compact and muscular build. Native to parts of Africa, it is part of the 'Old World' tarantula category, known for their more potent venom and defensive nature. Due to their quick reflexes and propensity to show aggressive behavior, they are generally recommended for experienced tarantula keepers.

Origin:

Pterinochilus murinus is found in various regions of central, eastern, and southern Africa, particularly in countries like Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. They are adapted to both savannah and scrubland environments.

Temperature:

The ideal temperature for an Orange Baboon Tarantula is between 75-85°F (24-29°C), with a humidity level of around 60-70%. These conditions mimic their natural habitat in Africa.

Housing:

A terrarium for an Orange Baboon Tarantula should include a substrate that allows for burrowing, as they are known to create extensive burrows in the wild. The enclosure should also provide hiding places and a shallow water dish. It's important to ensure the enclosure is secure, as they can be escape artists.

Feeding:

Their diet in captivity typically consists of insects like crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Feeding should be done once or twice a week, depending on the tarantula's size and appetite.

Lifespan:

In captivity, Orange Baboon Tarantulas can live for about 10-12 years, with females generally having a longer lifespan than males.

Behavior and Personality:

Pterinochilus murinus is known for its aggressive and defensive nature. They are quick to react and may exhibit threat postures or even bite if they feel threatened. Due to their temperament and potent venom, handling is not recommended.
