The Tanzanian Millipede, scientifically known as Spirostreptus spec. 1 “Tansania,” is a fascinating arthropod native to Tanzania, East Africa. These millipedes are known for their striking appearance with a glossy black exoskeleton and contrasting reddish-orange legs, creating a visually captivating spectacle. Their elongated body is adorned with numerous segments, each bearing two pairs of legs, making them resemble miniature armored trains.

Origin: Spirostreptus spec. 1 “Tansania” originates from the lush and diverse ecosystems of Tanzania, where it thrives in the warm and tropical climate.

Temperature: The ideal temperature for keeping Tanzanian Millipedes is around 70-80°F (21-27°C). It's essential to maintain a stable temperature within this range to ensure their well-being.

Housing: To provide a suitable environment for these millipedes, a terrarium or enclosure with ample space is necessary. A substrate of organic material, such as coconut coir or peat moss, should be used to maintain humidity levels. Proper ventilation is essential to prevent mold growth and ensure air circulation. Additionally, providing hiding spots like cork bark or leaf litter mimics their natural habitat, creating a comfortable and stress-free living environment.

Feeding: Tanzanian Millipedes are detritivores, primarily consuming decaying plant matter and organic debris. Their diet should consist of leaf litter, rotting wood, and fallen vegetation. It's crucial to maintain a consistent supply of suitable food sources to meet their dietary needs and ensure their health.

Lifespan: The lifespan of Tanzanian Millipedes varies, with individuals typically living for 5 to 10 years under proper care conditions. Adequate humidity, temperature, and a well-balanced diet can contribute to a longer and healthier life for these remarkable creatures.

Behavior and Personality: Tanzanian Millipedes are generally docile and solitary creatures. They spend most of their time burrowing in the substrate or crawling along the terrarium floor, exhibiting a slow and deliberate pace. Their gentle demeanor makes them an excellent choice for those interested in observing and caring for unique invertebrates. However, they can secrete a defensive chemical when threatened, so gentle handling is recommended to avoid stress.
