Allium christophii, also known as the Star of Persia, is a stunning ornamental onion that produces large spherical flower heads made up of tiny star-shaped purple flowers. These flowers appear in early summer and are held atop tall, sturdy stems that rise above the clump of attractive foliage. The flowers of Allium christophii are not only beautiful but also highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a great addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.

Why we like it:

  • Allium christophii adds an exotic touch to the garden with its unique and striking flower heads.
  • It is easy to grow and requires very little maintenance once established.
  • The flowers attract pollinators to the garden, supporting the local ecosystem.

What to know:

  • Allium christophii prefers full sun and well-draining soil.
  • It is drought-tolerant and does not require frequent watering, especially once established.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to prevent the plant from self-seeding and to maintain its neat appearance.
  • Allium christophii bulbs can be divided and replanted in autumn.
  • The flowering period of Allium christophii is in early summer, typically around May and June.

Height and Spread:

Allium christophii can grow up to 60cm in height and has a spread of around 30cm when fully grown.
