Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia, commonly known as Cherry Laurel, is a popular evergreen shrub that is widely used as a hedge plant due to its dense and bushy growth habit. It produces shiny, dark green, oval-shaped leaves that are up to 15cm long and 10cm wide. In spring, it produces clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that attract bees and butterflies, followed by red, cherry-like berries that are attractive to birds. Cherry Laurel is tolerant of a wide range of soil types and growing conditions, making it a versatile plant for many gardens.

Why we like it:

  • Cherry Laurel is a fast-growing shrub that can quickly form a dense hedge for privacy and security.
  • It is relatively low maintenance and requires only occasional pruning to maintain its shape.
  • The attractive foliage and spring flowers add year-round interest to a garden.

What to know:

  • Cherry Laurel prefers well-drained soil and partial shade, but it can tolerate a wide range of soil types and growing conditions.
  • It can grow up to 6m tall and 4m wide, so it is important to plant it in a location where it has enough space to grow.
  • The plant can be toxic to humans and animals if ingested, so it should be planted with caution in areas with pets or children.

Care tips:

  • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.
  • Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy growth.
  • Prune once a year in late summer to early fall to maintain the desired size and shape.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Cherry Laurel is generally disease and pest resistant, but it may be susceptible to fungal diseases in wet conditions.

Height and spread:

  • When fully grown, Cherry Laurel can reach a height and spread of up to 6m.
