The Hillstream Loach, belonging to the family Balitoridae, is a unique and fascinating fish, appreciated in the aquarium hobby for its distinctive appearance and specialized habitat needs. Native to fast-flowing streams and rivers in Asia, particularly in China, this species is characterized by its flat, disc-like body and patterns that mimic the appearance of a small stingray or a freshwater version of a marine suckerfish.

Origin:
Hillstream Loaches are found in various parts of Asia, including China, Vietnam, and other regions with fast-flowing, highly oxygenated streams and rivers.

Temperature:
The ideal temperature range for Hillstream Loaches is between 20°C and 26°C. They thrive in cooler, well-oxygenated water.

Water Quality:
These loaches prefer a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 and do best in soft to moderately hard water. The key to their health is high water oxygenation, often achieved with strong water flow and aeration.

Aquarium Size:
A minimum tank size of 75 liters is recommended for Hillstream Loaches. Tanks should be equipped with smooth rocks, a strong current, and ample oxygenation to mimic their natural habitat.

Feeding:
Hillstream Loaches are primarily algae eaters and should be provided with a diet rich in vegetable matter. Algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional small, meaty foods are suitable.

Lifespan:
In a well-maintained aquarium, Hillstream Loaches can live for about 8 to 10 years.

Community Tank Compatibility:
They are peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish that require similar water conditions. Their unique requirement for strong currents and cooler water should be considered when selecting tank mates.

Breeding:
Breeding Hillstream Loaches in captivity is challenging due to their specific environmental needs. Successful breeding usually requires a tank setup that closely mimics their natural fast-flowing stream habitat.
