Andinoacara pulcher, commonly known as the Electric Blue Acara, is a striking freshwater aquarium fish admired for its vibrant iridescent blue coloration and relatively peaceful temperament compared to other cichlids. Native to rivers and streams in Central and South America, the Electric Blue Acara is a hardy species that adapts well to aquarium life. At 3 inches, these juveniles are still growing and will eventually reach their full adult size. They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, making them a captivating centerpiece in a community tank.
Feeding
Electric Blue Acaras are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet. They readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Supplementing their diet with vegetable matter (like spirulina-based foods) helps maintain their health and coloration. Feed them moderate portions 1–2 times daily, ensuring food is consumed within a few minutes to avoid waste.
Special Requirements
While hardy, Electric Blue Acaras prefer stable water conditions. Maintain a consistent temperature between 24 to 28°C and a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. They appreciate a well-filtered aquarium with good oxygenation, live plants, and hiding places such as caves or driftwood. Regular water changes are essential to keep them healthy and vibrant.
Ideal Aquarium Size
A minimum aquarium size of 120 liters is recommended for a small group or a pair of Electric Blue Acaras. Larger tanks are ideal, especially if housing them with other fish, as they provide more swimming space and reduce territorial behavior.
Temperament
Electric Blue Acaras are generally peaceful for cichlids and can coexist with other medium-sized, non-aggressive fish species. They are best kept singly, in pairs, or in carefully chosen community setups. While less aggressive than many cichlids, they may show territorial behavior during breeding or if confined in small spaces.
Adult Size
Electric Blue Acaras grow larger than many community fish, with adults typically reaching 15–20 cm in length. At 3 inches, they are juveniles and will continue to grow with proper care.
PH Range
The recommended pH range for Electric Blue Acaras is 6.5 to 7.5.
