The Red Spotted Severum, a vibrant and highly sought-after variant of the Heros efasciatus species, is a stunning addition to medium and large freshwater aquariums. This variety is easily recognised by its warm golden to orange base colour, overlaid with bright red spotting across the body and face. These striking markings intensify with age, making mature Red Spotted Severums particularly eye-catching display fish. Native to the slow-moving, vegetation-rich waters of the Amazon Basin, they are appreciated for their generally peaceful temperament and impressive presence, making them popular among both hobbyists and advanced aquarists.

Origin: Red Spotted Severums originate from the Amazon Basin in South America, particularly in calm, slow-flowing tributaries and floodplain areas.

Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Red Spotted Severums is between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).

Water Quality: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.2 and soft to moderately hard water.

Aquarium Size: A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended. Red Spotted Severums grow to a substantial size and require ample swimming space, along with driftwood, plants, and hiding spots. They can be kept with other similarly sized, peaceful to semi-aggressive tankmates.

Feeding: Red Spotted Severums are omnivores and benefit from a varied diet. Offer high-quality pellets or flakes, along with vegetables such as blanched spinach, peas, and zucchini. Supplement with occasional protein-based foods like bloodworms, krill, or shrimp to support their colour and vitality.

Lifespan: With proper care, Red Spotted Severums typically live for about 8 to 10 years in captivity.

Behavior and Personality: These fish are known for their calm, intelligent, and interactive nature. While they can show mild territoriality, especially during breeding, they generally coexist well with other appropriately matched species. Their vibrant colouration, large size, and engaging behaviour make them a standout centerpiece in larger aquariums.
