Key Features:

Distinctive Appearance: Known for its deep, laterally compressed body with a silvery base color and darker shading along the fins and tail. It often has a subtle reddish or orange tint near the fins depending on age and condition, giving it a sleek but powerful “river fish” look.

Active Shoaling Behavior: A fast, energetic schooling fish that prefers open swimming space. It is highly active in mid-water and thrives in groups, where it displays natural shoaling patterns and synchronized movement.

Care Requirements:

Tank Conditions: Requires a large, well-filtered aquarium with stable water conditions and strong oxygenation. Ideal water temperature should range between 75–82°F (24–28°C). Prefers neutral to slightly acidic water and a setup with long swimming space and moderate flow.

Diet: Omnivorous with a strong tendency toward plant-based foods. Feeds on high-quality pellets, flakes, leafy vegetables (such as spinach or lettuce), and occasional frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Compatibility: Generally peaceful but very active, so best kept in groups of 5 or more. Suitable for large community tanks with similarly sized, robust fish. May nip softer plants or outcompete slow-moving species if underfed.

Size and Growth:

Adult Size: Can grow up to 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) depending on tank size and conditions.

Growth: Moderate to fast growth, especially in spacious aquariums with a protein- and plant-balanced diet.

Overview:

Myleus schomburgkii is a large South American characin valued for its striking silver body and strong schooling behavior. It is best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists who can provide large, well-maintained aquariums with ample swimming space and appropriate group sizes.
