The Togo Starburst Baboon Tarantula, scientifically known as Heteroscodra maculata, is a striking and intriguing species of tarantula that hails from West Africa. This tarantula species is renowned for its captivating appearance, featuring a vivid orange-brown body with striking yellowish patterns, making it a popular choice among arachnid enthusiasts. With a leg span that can reach up to six inches, the Togo Starburst Baboon Tarantula is a medium-sized tarantula that demands attention.

Origin: The Togo Starburst Baboon Tarantula, or Heteroscodra maculata, is native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa, specifically Togo and Ghana. These regions provide the ideal climate and habitat for this species to thrive.

Temperature: Maintaining an ideal temperature for the Togo Starburst Baboon Tarantula is crucial for its well-being. They thrive in temperatures ranging from 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C). It's essential to ensure a stable and warm environment to keep them healthy.

Housing: Creating a suitable habitat for this tarantula is vital. They require an enclosure with ample ventilation, such as a well-ventilated terrarium. A substrate of peat moss or coconut fiber should be provided for burrowing. A secure hide or shelter is essential, as well as branches or artificial plants for climbing and web-building. Ensuring the enclosure is escape-proof is crucial, as this species can be quite skittish and fast-moving.

Feeding: Togo Starburst Baboon Tarantulas are carnivorous and primarily feed on insects and other arthropods. Their diet can include crickets, cockroaches, mealworms, and occasionally small vertebrates in the wild. It's recommended to offer appropriately sized live prey every 1-2 weeks, adjusting the size of the prey item to match the spider's size.

Lifespan: These tarantulas have a relatively long lifespan for their size, with females living up to 10-15 years or more in captivity, while males have a significantly shorter lifespan of around 3-5 years. Proper care, including a suitable environment and a consistent feeding schedule, can contribute to their longevity.

Behavior and Personality: The Togo Starburst Baboon Tarantula is known for its defensive behavior. When threatened, it will often display its striking colors and may flick urticating hairs or bite as a defense mechanism. While they are not typically aggressive, they can be skittish and quick to react to disturbances. Observing them from a distance and handling them with care is recommended.
