The Kilimanjaro Mustard Baboon Tarantula, scientifically known as Pterinochilus chordatus, is a fascinating and less common species in the tarantula hobby. Native to the regions around Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, this species is a part of the 'Old World' tarantulas, known for their more defensive nature and potent venom. They exhibit a striking coloration that includes shades of mustard or yellow, often with a contrast of darker hues, which adds to their exotic appeal. This species is primarily recommended for experienced tarantula keepers due to their temperament and care requirements.

Origin:

Pterinochilus chordatus is indigenous to the areas surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro in East Africa. This environment consists of varied landscapes, including savannahs and mountainous areas.

Temperature:

The ideal temperature for this species is around 75-85°F (24-29°C), with moderate humidity levels. These conditions mimic their natural habitat in East Africa.

Housing:

A terrarium for a Kilimanjaro Mustard Baboon should include a deep substrate for burrowing, as they are known to create extensive burrow systems. The enclosure should also provide hiding places and a water dish, with good ventilation to maintain a healthy environment.

Feeding:

Their diet mainly consists of insects such as crickets, roaches, and occasionally larger prey like small mice, depending on the tarantula's size. Feeding should be done once or twice a week.

Lifespan:

In captivity, these tarantulas can live for several years, with females often outliving males. 'Old World' tarantulas like Pterinochilus chordatus generally have longer lifespans compared to 'New World' species.

Behavior and Personality:

Kilimanjaro Mustard Baboon Tarantulas are known for their defensive behavior and should be handled with care. They can be quick to react and may show aggressive tendencies when threatened. Handling is not recommended due to their speed and potential for biting.
