Campanula poscharskyana, commonly known as trailing bellflower, is a low-growing perennial with a spreading habit. It is native to the Dinaric Alps in southeastern Europe but is widely cultivated as a garden plant due to its attractive blue or purple bell-shaped flowers and ability to grow in a range of soil types and light conditions. The plant typically blooms from late spring to mid-summer and can be grown as a groundcover or in containers.

Why we like it:

  • Trailing bellflower is a hardy and adaptable plant that can thrive in a variety of growing conditions, making it suitable for many different types of gardens.
  • The plant produces a profusion of charming blue or purple flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, adding color and vitality to any garden.
  • Trailing bellflower is easy to grow and low-maintenance, making it a great choice for gardeners of all skill levels.

What to know:

  • Trailing bellflower prefers well-draining soil and moderate moisture levels, but can also tolerate dry conditions once established.
  • The plant prefers full sun to partial shade but can also grow in full shade, though it may produce fewer flowers.
  • Trailing bellflower can be propagated by division in the spring or fall, and should be divided every few years to prevent overcrowding.
  • The plant can be susceptible to rust and powdery mildew, so good air circulation and proper watering techniques are important to prevent these issues.
  • Trailing bellflower can be trimmed back after flowering to encourage bushier growth and more flowers the following season.

Height and Spread:

  • Trailing bellflower typically grows to a height of 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) and can spread up to 2-3 feet (60-90 cm).
