Overview

The Haitian Cichlid is a powerful Caribbean species that develops striking dark and pale contrast as it matures. It is suited to experienced keepers planning a dedicated adult setup.

Supplied size: 3 - 4 cm. Adult size is shown below.

English name Haitian Cichlid
Latin name Nandopsis haitiensis
Origin Hispaniola, including Haiti and the Dominican Republic
Adult size Around 25-35 cm; large males may exceed this
Typical lifespan 10 years or more
Temperament Territorial, particularly around breeding sites
Tank level Middle and lower
Social needs Usually keep singly; pairs can be highly aggressive even towards one another.

Tank Setup

Aquarium size Plan at least 450 litres with a 150 × 60 cm base for one adult; a breeding pair requires substantially more room and separation facilities.
Temperature 25-28°C
pH 7.0-8.0
Hardness 10-20 dGH
Water type Freshwater

Provide strong biological filtration, high oxygenation and robust shelters. Secure rockwork on the base because these fish can move substrate.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Very territorial and potentially destructive towards tankmates. Do not treat a small juvenile as a community fish; plan separation before attempting a pair.

Diet & Feeding

Feed measured portions of quality cichlid foods with a balanced vegetable component and suitable aquatic invertebrates. Avoid rich mammal meat and overfeeding.

Routine Care

Use a fully cycled aquarium before adding livestock. Check temperature, appetite and behaviour daily. Test water regularly: ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero. Make regular partial water changes with conditioned water matched to the aquarium's temperature and chemistry. Keep nitrate low and rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water.
