Overview

Bamboo Shrimp hold fan-shaped feeding appendages into the current to catch tiny particles. Their feeding method makes them fascinating to watch and means they need more than leftover fish food.

Supplied size: 2 - 3 cm. Adult size is shown below.

English name Bamboo Shrimp
Latin name Atyopsis moluccensis
Origin Southeast Asian streams
Adult size Around 8-10 cm
Typical lifespan 2-4 years
Temperament Peaceful; vulnerable to predatory tankmates
Tank level Raised perches in flowing water
Social needs Peaceful; provide feeding positions and shelter for every shrimp.

Tank Setup

Aquarium size At least 80 litres with a 75 × 30 cm base and a well-established, food-rich system.
Temperature 24-28°C
pH 6.5-7.5
Hardness 5-15 dGH
Water type Freshwater

Provide mature filtration, high oxygen levels and a clear current passing over elevated wood or stone perches. Include quieter moulting shelters.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Peaceful with small, non-predatory companions. Persistent scraping at the substrate can indicate insufficient suspended food.

Diet & Feeding

Target-feed suitably fine suspended foods upstream of the shrimp in small amounts. Do not rely on a clean aquarium to provide enough natural particles.

Routine Care

Use a fully cycled aquarium before adding livestock. Check temperature, appetite and behaviour daily. Test water regularly: ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero. Make regular partial water changes with conditioned water matched to the aquarium's temperature and chemistry. Keep nitrate low and rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water.

Check feeding posture and body condition. Keep filter intakes protected and use only shrimp-safe treatments.

Click & Collect Only

You can order online for Click & Collect. We will confirm when your livestock is ready to collect from Newlands Home and Garden Centre, Clondalkin, Dublin 22. We do not deliver live fish or aquatic invertebrates. Please have a suitable, fully prepared aquarium ready before collection.
