Diamond Tetras (Moenkhausia pittieri), also known as Brillant Rummy Nose Tetras, are dazzling and captivating freshwater fish that add elegance and beauty to aquariums. With their diamond-like iridescent scales and vibrant red noses, these tetras create a stunning display when kept in groups.
Origin: Diamond Tetras are native to the rivers and streams of Venezuela and Colombia in South America. They inhabit slow-moving waters, particularly in areas with dense vegetation and submerged branches.
Temperature: The Diamond Tetra thrives in tropical temperatures typically found in heated aquariums. The ideal temperature range for these fish is between 74°F and 82°F (23°C and 28°C). Maintaining a stable and suitable temperature within this range is important for their overall health and well-being.
Housing: Diamond Tetras are relatively small and can be housed in smaller aquariums. A tank with a minimum capacity of 20 gallons (75 liters) is suitable for a small group. Providing plants, driftwood, and other decorations will create hiding places and mimic their natural environment. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are necessary to maintain excellent water quality.
Feeding: Diamond Tetras are omnivorous and have a versatile diet. They readily accept high-quality tropical fish flakes or pellets as their staple diet. Supplementing their diet with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia will provide added variety and nutritional value. Including some vegetable matter, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables, is also beneficial.
Lifespan: With proper care, Diamond Tetras can live for approximately 3 to 5 years. The lifespan may vary based on individual genetics, tank conditions, diet, and overall care. Providing a well-maintained tank environment, suitable nutrition, and a stress-free atmosphere contribute to their longevity.
Behavior and Personality: Diamond Tetras are peaceful and social fish that are best kept in groups of at least six individuals. They are generally compatible with other peaceful community fish of similar size. These tetras are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their surroundings. The vibrant red nose of the Diamond Tetra intensifies during periods of excitement or when establishing social hierarchies within the group.
