Overview

Also called the snakeskin barb, this Bornean species develops irregular dark flank markings on a warm-coloured body. Adults reach about 5–5.5cm.

Scientific name: Desmopuntius rhomboocellatus

Behaviour

Keep eight to ten together. They are quiet shoaling fish; sparse groups often hide and display less naturally.

Tank Size

Our recommended minimum is 80 litres with an 80 × 30cm base; 100 litres or more is preferable alongside other species. Plant the sides densely and leave a swimming corridor.

These are adult housing recommendations; choose more space when adding tank mates. Allow for space occupied by substrate and décor when comparing aquarium capacities.

Compatibility

Pair with small peaceful fish suited to soft, slightly acidic water. Avoid aggressive cichlids or very active fish that dominate feeding.

Diet

Use small flakes or micro-pellets, supported by daphnia and brine shrimp. Distribute food so shy fish at the back can eat.

Use shaded areas, driftwood and gentle to moderate flow. Check tap-water hardness before stocking. Acclimatise carefully and do not use rapid pH adjustments to chase a number.

Add only to a fully cycled aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0mg/l. Start with a 25–30% weekly water change using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and adjust to test results and stocking. Rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under the tap.
