Red Leg Millipede | Alienostreptus bicolouripes

Plan the habitat for the adult animal, with secure housing and room to carry out its natural behaviour.

Origin & natural habitat Vietnam
Adult size up to about 20 cm
Lifespan Usually 5–8+ years
Temperament Individuals vary; allow time to settle before any handling.
Activity Activity varies; give the animal sheltered resting places.
Social needs Often suitable for same-species groups with ample space and food.

Housing & Setup

Enclosure dimensions are length × depth × height unless stated otherwise. Plan for the adult animal; larger, suitably furnished housing is encouraged.

Adult housing Adult: at least 45 × 30 × 30 cm; larger for groups
Enclosure type Secure, ventilated forest-floor enclosure.
Temperature 22–26 °C
Lighting & UVB A regular day/night cycle with darkness at night; specialist UVB is not required. Avoid direct sunlight and overheating.
Humidity / moisture 80–90%
Substrate Deep organic soil mixed generously with decayed hardwood and pesticide-free hardwood leaf litter. Coconut coir alone is not a nutritious substrate.
Furnishings & filtration Secure hides and furnishings; drinking water must remain accessible.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Observe rather than handle frequently. Millipedes may release irritating defensive fluids: wash hands after maintenance and keep them away from eyes and mouth. Do not combine with predatory invertebrates.

Feeding & Nutrition

Decaying hardwood and leaf litter are the staple food and must remain available continuously. Add small portions of suitable vegetables and occasional fruit; remove leftovers before mould develops. Supply an appropriate calcium source. Do not replace the edible substrate with fruit or feeder insects.

Routine Care

Check food, water or drinking droplets, ventilation and substrate moisture regularly. Remove waste and spoiled food promptly; avoid disturbing animals during moulting. Keep doors and ventilation gaps secure.

Important Before Buying

Confirm species, adult size and the supplied animal’s substrate conditions. The substrate is both food and habitat; prepare it before collection.

Live Animals Are Click & Collect Only

We do not ship live animals. Order online and wait for confirmation that your animal is ready before collecting from Newlands Home and Garden Centre, Clondalkin, Dublin 22. Have the enclosure prepared and its conditions checked before collection.
