The Horsfield’s tortoise, also called the Russian tortoise, is an active grazer and determined digger. Its compact shell belies a need for generous floor space, strong daylight and a long-term commitment to care.

Housing & Setup
Enclosure dimensions are length × depth × height. Plan for the adult animal and provide more space wherever possible.
| Adult housing |
Plan a secure pen of at least 210 × 110 × 60 cm for one adult, with ample digging depth. Juvenile accommodation must expand as it grows. |
| Temperature |
Basking area around 32–35°C with a cooler retreat around 20–25°C. Monitor both ends and use thermostat-controlled heating. |
| Lighting & UVB |
Provide bright daytime lighting and appropriate reptile UVB with shaded retreats. Check lamp distance and output; switch visible lights off at night. |
| Substrate & moisture |
Deep, pesticide-free soil-based substrate for digging, with a humid retreat. Avoid permanently wet conditions; young tortoises need particular attention to hydration. |
| Furnishings |
Shelters, stable obstacles and a shallow water dish. Outdoor access in suitable weather needs predator protection, secure buried boundaries and a dry heated shelter when required. |
Behaviour & Compatibility
House individually. Do not mix species. Keep handling brief, support the whole body and never allow falls.
Feeding & Nutrition
Offer a varied, high-fibre diet of safe, pesticide-free weeds and leafy plants, including suitable dandelion and plantain leaves. Avoid routine fruit, animal protein and sugary treats. Provide calcium and supplements appropriate to the UVB setup, and fresh shallow drinking water.
Routine Care
Remove waste and uneaten food daily. Check appetite, activity, shell condition and weight. Protect against overheating and chilling. Discuss any hibernation plan with an experienced reptile vet; do not attempt it with an unwell animal.
Important Before Buying
Confirm the animal’s age, origin and current routine with our reptile team. This is a decades-long commitment; arrange suitable adult housing before purchase.
