Overview
A large, powerful cichlid native to Hispaniola. Adults can reach 30cm or more, particularly males. The 2–2.5cm arrival size hides a substantial long-term space requirement.
Scientific name: Nandopsis haitiensis
Behaviour
Highly territorial and capable of injuring tank mates. Keep one specimen as the default; forming a pair is an experienced-keeper project that requires a divider or spare aquarium.
Tank Size
Our recommended minimum for one adult is 450 litres with at least a 150 × 60cm base. A managed pair needs 700 litres or more and at least 180 × 60cm. A small juvenile aquarium is only temporary.
These are adult housing recommendations; choose more space when adding tank mates. Allow for space occupied by substrate and décor when comparing aquarium capacities.
Compatibility
Not suitable for a peaceful community. Do not add small fish or assume other large cichlids will be tolerated. Solitary housing avoids much of the aggression risk.
Diet
Use a complete high-quality cichlid pellet and a varied, measured diet with suitable frozen invertebrate foods. Avoid feeder fish and mammal meat; remove uneaten food.
Care
- Temperature: 25–28°C
- pH: 7.2–8.0
- General hardness: 8–16 dGH
Install strong biological filtration, surface agitation and secure heavy décor directly on the tank base. Protect equipment from digging and impact. Start with 30–50% weekly water changes, adjusting to test results; monitor appetite and abdominal swelling. Plan its adult tank before purchase.
Add only to a fully cycled aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0mg/l. Start with a 25–30% weekly water change using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and adjust to test results and stocking. Rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under the tap.
