Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance:
A colorful variety of goldfish known for its beautiful calico patterning of blue, white, orange, red, and black markings. Shubunkins are prized for their unique patterns, with each fish displaying its own individual coloration. Their slender body shape, flowing fins, and metallic or matte scales create an attractive appearance in ponds and large aquariums.
Graceful Swimmer:
Displays active and elegant swimming movements, often exploring all areas of the pond or aquarium. Shubunkins are energetic swimmers that enjoy open spaces and are especially impressive when kept in groups where their colors and movement can be fully appreciated.
Behavior:
Peaceful, hardy, and social, Shubunkins are excellent community fish that thrive alongside other goldfish varieties. They are curious and active, often following keepers around and showing strong feeding responses.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions:
Requires a spacious aquarium or outdoor pond with excellent filtration and plenty of swimming room. Ideal water temperature is 65–75°F (18–24°C), with a pH of 6.8–8.0 preferred. Good oxygenation, regular maintenance, and stable water quality are essential for long-term health. Smooth gravel, sand, and aquatic plants provide a suitable natural environment.
Diet:
Omnivorous. Thrives on a varied diet including high-quality goldfish pellets, flakes, gel foods, vegetables such as peas and spinach, and occasional treats like bloodworms and brine shrimp. A balanced diet supports healthy growth, body condition, and vibrant coloration.
Compatibility:
Very peaceful and suitable for community setups with other goldfish varieties, including Common Goldfish, Comets, and Fantails. Avoid aggressive fish or tropical species requiring much warmer water. Their active swimming style makes them best suited with similarly sized tank mates.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size:
Typically reaches 25–35 cm (10–14 inches), although juveniles are commonly sold at 2–3 inches.
Growth:
Grows steadily under optimal conditions, with growth rate depending on tank size, water quality, and diet. Providing spacious living conditions, clean water, and proper nutrition allows Shubunkins to develop stronger body shape and more vibrant coloration as they mature.
