Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance:
A unique, eel-like freshwater fish known for its long, slender body, olive-green to brown coloration, and small paddle-shaped pectoral fins. Its elongated snake-like appearance and primitive features give it a fascinating prehistoric look, making it a standout species in larger aquariums.
Graceful Swimmer:
Displays slow, graceful, snake-like movements, often weaving through plants, driftwood, and open areas of the aquarium. Reedfish are most active during dim lighting or nighttime hours, adding interesting movement and character to the aquarium.
Behavior:
Peaceful, hardy, and intelligent, Reedfish are curious explorers that spend much of their time investigating their surroundings. They are generally non-aggressive but may prey on very small fish that can fit in their mouth. They are also excellent escape artists and require a secure aquarium lid.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions:
Requires a spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding places such as driftwood, caves, dense plants, and shaded areas. Ideal water temperature is 75–82°F (24–28°C), with a pH of 6.5–7.5 preferred. Gentle water flow, good filtration, and a tightly secured lid are essential, as Reedfish can breathe atmospheric air and may attempt to leave the aquarium.
Diet:
Carnivorous. Thrives on a varied diet including high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, earthworms, and other meaty foods. A protein-rich diet supports healthy growth and maintains strong body condition.
Compatibility:
Generally peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with medium to large peaceful fish. Best kept with species such as larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, gouramis, and other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid very small fish, as they may be viewed as prey, and avoid aggressive species that may harass them.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size:
Typically reaches 60–90 cm (24–35 inches), although juveniles are commonly sold at 20–30 cm.
Growth:
Grows steadily under optimal care, with growth rate influenced by diet, tank size, and water quality. Providing warm, clean water and a protein-rich diet allows Reedfish to develop strong body condition and reach their impressive adult size over time.
