The Green Terror Cichlid (Andinoacara rivulatus) is a vibrant and striking freshwater fish, popular in the aquarium trade for its brilliant coloration and dynamic personality. Native to South America, particularly in Ecuador and Peru, this species is characterized by its bright green and blue hues, with a prominent orange stripe along the flanks in males.
Origin:
Green Terror Cichlids are found in the river systems of the western slopes of the Andes Mountains in South America, including the Tumbes and Esmeraldas rivers.
Temperature:
The ideal temperature range for Green Terror Cichlids is between 22°C and 28°C. They thrive in warm, tropical water conditions.
Water Quality:
These cichlids prefer a pH range of 6.5 to 8.0 and are best suited to soft to moderately hard water. Stable water conditions and regular water changes are important for maintaining their health.
Aquarium Size:
A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended for a single Green Terror Cichlid, as they can grow quite large, up to 30 cm in length. A larger tank is necessary if housing more than one, as they can be territorial.
Feeding:
Green Terror Cichlids are omnivorous and require a varied diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter.
Lifespan:
In a well-maintained aquarium, Green Terror Cichlids can live for about 7 to 10 years.
Community Tank Compatibility:
They are known for their aggressive and territorial behavior, especially during breeding. It's best to keep them with other large, robust fish that can hold their own but avoid overly aggressive species to prevent constant conflict.
Breeding:
Breeding Green Terror Cichlids can be challenging due to their aggression. They are substrate spawners and exhibit parental care. A breeding pair requires a large tank with flat rocks or similar surfaces for egg laying.
