The Cherry Barb is a peaceful, small shoaling fish from Sri Lanka. Males develop rich red colouring, especially when kept in a settled group with plenty of plant cover.

Aquarium and water conditions

• Minimum aquarium size: At least 54 litres for a group, with a base of at least 60 × 30 cm
• Temperature: 20–27°C
• pH: 6.0–8.0
• Water hardness: 2–20 dGH

Provide a planted aquarium with a dark substrate, driftwood and shaded retreats, while leaving room to swim. Moderate water movement, reliable filtration and regular partial water changes are suitable.

Behaviour and compatibility

Keep at least six to ten together. Cherry Barbs are generally peaceful and can share an appropriately sized aquarium with other small barbs, tetras, peaceful livebearers and bottom dwellers. Avoid large predators or especially aggressive companions.

Diet

Offer quality small flakes or granules, including some plant-based food, and supplement with frozen or live Daphnia, Artemia or bloodworm. Feed modest portions.

Care notes

A group with a mix of males and females encourages natural displays and stronger colour. Maintain stable water conditions and generous cover.
