Albino Rainbow Shark

Overview

Common Name: Albino Rainbow Shark
Scientific Name: Epalzeorhynchos frenatum (Albino)
Origin: Southeast Asia
Adult Size: 12–15cm
Lifespan: 5–8 years
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Care Level: Moderate

The Albino Rainbow Shark is a striking freshwater fish with a creamy white to pale yellow body and vibrant red-orange fins. Its bold colours and active nature make it a popular centrepiece in larger aquariums. Although generally peaceful with fish that occupy different areas of the tank, it can become territorial as it matures.

Behaviour

Albino Rainbow Sharks are active bottom-dwelling fish that establish territories, particularly around caves and driftwood. They are best kept singly and may become aggressive towards other Rainbow Sharks, Red-tailed Sharks and similarly shaped bottom-dwelling fish. They spend much of their day patrolling the aquarium and exploring their surroundings.

Tank Size

Minimum Tank Size: 200 litres

A spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room, caves, rocks, driftwood and dense planting is ideal. Provide multiple hiding places and good water movement with efficient filtration.

Compatibility

Suitable for larger community aquariums with carefully selected tank mates.

Good tank mates include:

  • Rainbowfish

  • Larger Barbs

  • Danios

  • Gouramis

  • Robust Tetras

Avoid:

  • Other Rainbow Sharks

  • Red-tailed Black Sharks

  • Similar-shaped bottom-dwelling fish

  • Slow-moving or long-finned species

Diet

Omnivore

Feeds on:

  • Quality sinking pellets

  • Algae wafers

  • Flake food

  • Frozen bloodworms

  • Brine shrimp

  • Fresh vegetables such as courgette and spinach

Feed once or twice daily with a varied diet.

Care

Water Temperature: 24–28°C
pH Range: 6.5–7.5
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

Maintain excellent water quality with regular weekly water changes and efficient filtration. Provide a mature aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of décor to establish territories. A varied diet and clean environment will help maintain vibrant colouration and overall health.
