The Firemouth Cichlid is a Central American cichlid known for its vivid red throat and display behaviour. It needs a roomy, established aquarium with clear territories and good water quality.

Aquarium and water conditions

• Minimum aquarium size: At least 108 litres with a base of 120 × 30 cm for a pair; larger for a community
• Temperature: 20–32°C
• pH: 6.5–8.5
• Water hardness: 2–15 dGH

Provide a soft sandy substrate, smooth rocks, driftwood and sheltered areas. Leave clear swimming space and use effective filtration. Carry out regular partial water changes.

Behaviour and compatibility

A pair can defend a territory, particularly when breeding. In sufficiently large aquariums, suitable companions include robust, similarly sized peaceful fish. Avoid very small fish that may be eaten and aggressive cichlids that cannot be given separate space.

Diet

Offer quality cichlid pellets or granules, including some vegetable content, supplemented with varied frozen or live foods such as Artemia and bloodworm. Feed appropriate portions.

Care notes

Introduce only to a mature aquarium. Provide multiple visual barriers and watch compatibility as individuals mature.
