Key Features:

Distinctive Appearance: Known for its elongated, whip-like tail and slender, armored body with rich brown to chocolate coloration, often with subtle mottling or lighter markings. Its streamlined shape and delicate fins give it a unique, almost leaf-like appearance when resting on driftwood or substrate.

Calm Bottom-Dweller: A peaceful and shy catfish that spends most of its time near the bottom of the tank or resting on wood and decorations. It is mostly active during low light periods and contributes to tank cleanliness by grazing on biofilm and detritus.

Care Requirements:

Tank Conditions: Requires a well-maintained aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of hiding places such as driftwood, caves, and plants. Ideal water temperature should range between 72–79°F (22–26°C). Prefers soft to moderately hard water with a neutral to slightly acidic pH and good oxygenation.

Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on sinking wafers, algae-based foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp. A fiber-rich diet with wood present in the tank is beneficial.

Compatibility: Generally very peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other calm, non-aggressive fish. Should not be kept with overly boisterous or aggressive species that may outcompete it for food.

Size and Growth:

Adult Size: Can grow up to 5–6 inches (12–15 cm) in length.

Growth: Slow to moderate growth, with steady development in stable, well-oxygenated aquarium conditions.

Overview:

Rineloricaria sp. 'Chocolate', commonly known as the Chocolate Whiptail Catfish, is a popular peaceful bottom-dweller valued for its unusual whip-like tail and gentle nature. It is best suited for beginner to intermediate aquarists who maintain calm, well-structured community aquariums with driftwood and soft substrates.
