Cheilanthes lanosa, commonly known as the hairy lip-fern, is a resilient and attractive fern species admired for its ability to thrive in challenging conditions. This small, evergreen fern is distinguished by its compact size and the unique texture of its fronds, which are covered in fine hairs, giving the plant a soft, velvety appearance. The fronds are typically green but can take on a silver-gray hue, depending on the light. Cheilanthes lanosa is well-suited for rock gardens, dry shade gardens, and as a part of native plant collections, where it can add texture and interest without requiring much moisture.
Why we like it
- Thrives in dry, rocky soils, making it ideal for challenging garden spots
- Evergreen foliage provides year-round interest
- Unique, hairy fronds add texture and visual appeal to garden compositions
What to know
- Prefers full sun to partial shade, with better drought tolerance in shadier spots
- Requires well-drained, even sandy or rocky soil
- Very drought tolerant once established, needing minimal additional water
- Avoid overwatering, as it does not tolerate waterlogged conditions
- Generally low maintenance, requiring little care beyond occasional cleaning of dead fronds
