The males have a very slender, elegant body that is beautifully coloured turquoise-blue. The legs are bronze-coloured above and black towards the bottom and thin like a pencil line. They grow to about 10 cm when fully grown. The females grow larger than the males and are somewhat more robust in build. They strongly resemble twigs and are coloured from light to dark brown. When fully grown, they are about 14 cm long. If the stick insects are frightened or feel threatened or attacked, they can fall into a rigor mortis from which they wake up again after a few minutes. In addition, they quickly throw off a leg in fright to distract their enemies. If they are not yet fully grown, the leg will grow back, but it will not reach its original size.
