The black ruby barb (Pethia nigrofasciata) is an active Sri Lankan schooling fish. Mature males develop rich ruby-red and dark colouring, while younger fish show contrasting vertical bands. These juveniles measure approximately 3.5–4 cm.

Overview

Origin: Sri Lanka. Adult size: around 6 cm. Keep at least six together so the group can display natural social behaviour.

Behaviour

Active, sociable and generally peaceful when kept in a proper group. Provide plants and shaded areas around an open swimming space.

Tank Size

Choose a mature aquarium at least 80 cm long for a group; a larger tank offers more swimming room and flexibility with tankmates.

Compatibility

Keep with peaceful fish of similar size that tolerate the same relatively cool tropical conditions. Avoid slow, delicate tankmates if the group is too small or space is restricted.

Diet

Feed a varied omnivorous diet of quality small pellets or flakes, supplemented with suitable frozen or live foods and some vegetable matter. Offer modest portions that are consumed promptly.

Care

Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water at approximately 20–26°C; aim for stable mildly acidic to neutral conditions. Test water regularly, keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, and carry out partial water changes. Introduce new fish gradually to avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry.
