The landscape
Behind the layout
Dan Crawford’s 100-litre aquarium layers fresh green Helanthium and Hygrophila against darker Anubias, ferns and Spiky moss. Black gravel makes the foliage stand out, while Ludwigia Rubin adds a warm red accent.
Use lower planting at the front and taller stems behind the hardscape to create the feeling of a sheltered river clearing. Allow space for the stems and runners to grow, then trim to preserve the open centre. The planting guide uses marker G for both ordinary Java fern and Windeløv.
