The Glowlight Tetra (Hemigrammus erythrozonus), also known as the Fire Neon Tetra, is a captivating freshwater fish highly valued for its vibrant colors and peaceful demeanor. Originating from the blackwater rivers of South America, this species adds a dazzling display to any well-maintained aquarium.

Origin: The Glowlight Tetra is native to the blackwater regions of South America, particularly the rivers and streams of the Amazon basin. It can be found in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, and Guyana, where it thrives in the warm, acidic waters characteristic of its natural habitat.

Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Glowlight Tetras is between 75°F and 82°F (24°C and 28°C). These fish are accustomed to warm tropical waters, so maintaining a stable and suitable temperature within this range is essential for their overall health and vitality.

Housing: Glowlight Tetras are relatively small fish, reaching an average size of around 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 centimeters). Therefore, they can be kept in smaller aquariums, with a minimum tank size of 10 gallons (38 liters) for a small group. However, providing more space, such as a 20-gallon (75-liter) tank, is recommended for a larger school. The tank should be well-filtered to maintain excellent water quality, and it is advisable to recreate the soft and slightly acidic conditions found in their natural habitat. Adding live plants, driftwood, and dim lighting will enhance their comfort and mimic their native environment.

Feeding: Glowlight Tetras are omnivorous and have a versatile diet. They readily accept high-quality dry flakes or pellets as their primary food. However, it is essential to supplement their diet with small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Providing a varied diet will ensure they receive a wide range of essential nutrients, enhancing their colors and overall well-being.

Lifespan: With proper care, Glowlight Tetras can live for approximately 3 to 5 years. Maintaining good water quality, providing a balanced diet, and creating a stress-free environment are key factors in promoting their longevity. As with any fish, individual genetics and environmental conditions can influence their lifespan.

Behavior and Personality: Glowlight Tetras are peaceful and social fish, making them ideal for community aquariums. They are known for their stunning orange-red stripe that runs horizontally across their body, complemented by a shimmering silver coloration. These tetras are generally non-aggressive and coexist peacefully with other small, non-aggressive tankmates. It is recommended to keep them in groups of at least six individuals, as they feel more secure and display their natural schooling behavior.
