Behavior

  • Fast, defensive Old World species.

  • Fossorial tarantula that constructs deep burrows lined with silk.

  • Very shy but can be defensive when disturbed.

  • Not recommended for handling due to speed and potent venom.

Enclosure Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30–40 liters for a single adult

  • Substrate: 12–15 cm of coconut fiber, peat moss, or soil mix to allow deep burrowing

  • Decor: Cork bark or hides to help start a burrow

  • Humidity: 70–80%

  • Temperature:

    • Day: 24–28°C

    • Night: 20–24°C

  • Lighting: Low light; indirect only

  • Ventilation: Moderate airflow to prevent stagnant humidity

Compatibility

  • Must be housed singly; highly territorial toward other spiders.

  • Avoid housing with any other invertebrates.

Diet

  • Carnivorous; feeds on live prey:

    • Crickets

    • Roaches

    • Mealworms or superworms

  • Feed juveniles 2–3× per week; adults 1–2× per week

  • Provide a small water dish

  • Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours

  • Spiderlings are independent once hatched and require small live prey.
