Gecko Mourning
The Gecko Mourning, also known as the "Mourning Gecko," is a fascinating small lizard species belonging to the Gekkonidae family. This charming gecko is named for its mournful-sounding calls, which it uses to communicate with others of its kind. Native to the islands of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific, the Gecko Mourning has become a popular choice among reptile enthusiasts due to its manageable size and ease of care.
Origin: The Gecko Mourning is native to the islands of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific. It can be found in coastal regions such as the Maldives, Sri Lanka, India and Myanmar.
Temperature: The ideal temperature for housing Gecko Mourning is typically between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F) during the day and can be allowed to drop slightly at night. It's essential to provide a temperature gradient within the enclosure to allow the gecko to thermoregulate and choose its preferred temperature.
Housing: Keeping Gecko Mourning requires a suitable and secure enclosure. A well-ventilated terrarium of at least 10 gallons is sufficient for a pair of these geckos. Substrate options can include coconut fiber or peat moss, allowing them to burrow and hide. Providing plenty of climbing opportunities with branches and plants mimics their natural environment and enhances their overall well-being. Additionally, a shallow water dish should be available for them to drink from and, if desired, to bathe in.
Feeding: The diet of the Gecko Mourning primarily consists of insects. They are insectivores and will eagerly consume small prey items such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets, and small roaches. Providing a varied and appropriately sized diet is essential to meet their nutritional needs.
Lifespan: With proper care and a suitable environment, Gecko Mourning can live for around 6 to 10 years in captivity. Their relatively long lifespan makes them excellent long-term companions for reptile enthusiasts.
Behavior and Personality: Gecko Mourning is a nocturnal species, meaning they are most active during the night. They are generally shy and may prefer to hide during the day, coming out to explore and hunt for food in the cover of darkness. Their mournful-sounding calls are used to communicate with other geckos and establish territories.
