Overview

The Brazilian Black Tarantula develops velvety black colouring and a robust body. Adult leg span is commonly around 15–18 cm. Its slow growth and potentially long female lifespan make it a substantial long-term commitment.

Origin

Southern Brazil. This is a terrestrial tarantula; young animals often excavate a burrow.

Housing

Keep singly in a low, secure enclosure. For an adult, our recommended starting footprint is approximately 40 × 30 cm with 10–15 cm of compacted, burrowable substrate and a cork hide. Keep the gap from substrate to lid short, ideally no more than about one leg span. Hard objects beneath a climbing heavy-bodied spider increase the danger of a fall. Use a smaller container for the current small specimen.

Temperature & Moisture

Aim for 20–24°C. Larger specimens usually suit mostly dry substrate, a permanent water dish and a small damp corner. Spiderlings need a little more retained moisture low in the substrate, never wet sludge. Avoid direct heat beneath a burrowing enclosure.

Feeding

Offer small crickets or roach nymphs to young spiders roughly once or twice weekly; adults often need a modest meal only every 1–2 weeks or less. Adjust to body condition. This slow-growing species may fast for extended periods; a well-rounded abdomen and available water are more useful checks than insisting on a fixed meal schedule.

Behaviour & Care

Often comparatively calm, but temperament is individual and handling risks abdominal injury. Do not uncover a sealed burrow or repeatedly offer prey to a fasting spider. Remove uneaten live prey within 24 hours and immediately if moulting is suspected. Do not disturb a spider on its back or open a sealed retreat. After a moult, wait until the fangs are dark and fully hardened before feeding; this takes longer in larger spiders.
