View full detailsCreate shelter and plant for exposure
Wind can dry leaves and roots and make establishment harder. Consider a wind-filtering hedge using suitable privet, Griselinia, Escallonia or Japanese spindle, with Olearia offering another evergreen option. Rowan trees provide choices where their eventual size fits, while Festuca adds low foliage movement in suitable free-draining ground. Wind tolerance varies with variety, location and winter conditions, so exposed inland gardens and salty seafront sites need different choices. Start with shelter, secure young trees appropriately and keep new planting watered. Use the coastal collection where salt-laden winds are also a factor.
Notice prevailing wind direction, frost exposure and whether salt spray reaches the garden.
A suitable permeable hedge can provide shelter. Allow for the hedge’s mature width and pruning access.
Check staking and ties for young trees, and monitor moisture while roots become established.
