View full detailsChoose coastal plants for the shelter you have
Start with Olearia and Japanese spindle for resilient evergreen structure, then consider Griselinia or Escallonia for hedging where there is some protection from direct sea winds. Add Armeria for compact flowers, Erigeron for daisy colour and Eryngium for sculptural summer blooms. Lavender, Pittosporum and Phormium bring fragrance or foliage to suitable positions behind shelter. Coastal suitability varies: a garden further inland is very different from an exposed seafront. Check each plant’s needs and bring photos to our horticulturists for a planting plan that fits your site.
Use a wind-filtering hedge or suitable screening. New plants still need protection and regular watering while their roots establish.
Olearia and Japanese spindle tolerate salty winds. Place lavender, Phormium and more sensitive foliage behind shelter, checking each variety’s hardiness.
Sea thrift and lavender need free-draining conditions. Allow hedges and architectural plants room to reach their mature size.
