Overview

A long-finned ornamental form of the White Cloud Mountain Minnow from southern China. Adults reach about 4cm; the extended fins make them less suited to fin-nipping companions.

Scientific name: Tanichthys albonubes

Behaviour

Keep eight to ten together. Males display to one another, while the group uses the middle and upper swimming areas.

Tank Size

Our recommended minimum is 60 litres with a 60 × 30cm base; 80 litres or more is preferable for a community. Leave a clear swimming lane and sheltered planted edges.

These are adult housing recommendations; choose more space when adding tank mates. Allow for space occupied by substrate and décor when comparing aquarium capacities.

Compatibility

Use small peaceful fish suited to cooler water. Avoid large goldfish, predators and fin-nipping barbs; tropical betta conditions are too warm for a good long-term match.

Diet

Feed fine flakes or micro-pellets with daphnia or brine shrimp. Offer small portions and check that fish with long fins are not outcompeted.

Care

• Temperature: 16–22°C
• pH: 6.0–8.0
• General hardness: 5–20 dGH

Use a thermometer even without a heater. Improve surface movement during warm weather and keep the tank away from direct sunlight. Avoid powerful currents that continually buffet their extended fins.

Add only to a fully cycled aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0mg/l. Start with a 25–30% weekly water change using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and adjust to test results and stocking. Rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under the tap.
