Overview

Caribena versicolor is the Antilles or Martinique Pinktoe Tarantula. Blue spiderlings develop green, reddish and purple tones as they mature. Adult leg span is commonly around 12–15 cm.

Origin

Martinique in the Caribbean. This is a tree-dwelling species that constructs silk retreats above ground.

Housing

House singly in a tall enclosure with ventilation on opposing sides. For an adult, our recommended starting size is approximately 20 × 20 × 30 cm; use a smaller, escape-proof enclosure for a smaller specimen. Fit upright cork bark and foliage near the upper half, leaving space for a web retreat. Avoid a lid that repeatedly tears that retreat apart.

Temperature & Moisture

Aim for 21–24°C with a clean water dish always available. Lightly moisten a small section of substrate when needed and let surfaces dry. Stagnant, continuously wet air is a particular concern for pinktoes; good cross-ventilation matters more than chasing a humidity percentage. Do not spray the spider directly.

Feeding

Offer appropriately sized crickets or roaches near the web entrance. Start with small meals once or twice weekly for tiny spiderlings, about weekly for juveniles and less often for adults; adjust to abdomen condition and appetite. Do not force prey into the retreat.

Behaviour & Care

A climbing species that may bolt or jump when startled; observe rather than handle. Keep a catch cup ready for maintenance and check the spider’s position before opening. Remove uneaten live prey within 24 hours and immediately if moulting is suspected. Do not disturb a spider on its back or open a sealed retreat. After a moult, wait until the fangs are dark and fully hardened before feeding; this takes longer in larger spiders.
