Grade A Koi are ornamental carp selected for their colour and pattern. This listing is for a young fish approximately 15–18 cm long at sale; its adult pond requirements are substantially larger.

Aquarium and water conditions

• Minimum pond size: At least 4,500 litres for koi, with a depth preferably over 90 cm; plan stocking for full adult size
• Temperature: 4–24°C in a suitable outdoor pond
• pH: 6.5–8.5
• Water hardness: 8–18 dGH

Provide a mature, well-filtered pond with ample swimming space, circulation and oxygenation. Test water regularly; ammonia and nitrite should remain at zero. Shelter and sensible predator protection are important.

Behaviour and compatibility

Koi are social and can be kept with other suitably sized pond fish that share their conditions. Avoid overcrowding and introduce new fish gradually so the filter can cope with the additional waste.

Diet

Feed an appropriately sized, balanced koi or pond-fish food in amounts the fish consume within a few minutes. Adjust feeding to water temperature; ask for advice on seasonal feeding and avoid excess food in cold weather.

Care notes

These fish grow far beyond their sale size, so choose the pond and filtration for adults. Check water weekly and monitor changes in breathing, appetite and behaviour.
