The Silvertip Tetra is a lively South American shoaling fish with bright pale tips to its fins. A generous group makes a colourful addition to a suitable planted community aquarium.
Overview
- Origin: São Francisco river basin, Brazil
- Adult size: 5 cm
- Temperament: Peaceful and active
- Swimming level: Middle
Aquarium and water conditions
- Minimum aquarium size: At least 68 litres for a group, with a base around 60 × 38 cm
- Temperature: 23–28°C
- pH: 6.0–8.0
- Water hardness: 5–20 dGH
Provide swimming room and planting or driftwood for cover. Moderate lighting helps show its colour. Use reliable filtration and regular partial water changes.
Behaviour and compatibility
Keep at least six, preferably ten or more, to spread chasing within the group. Suitable tank mates include peaceful livebearers, danios, rasboras and Corydoras. Avoid large predatory fish.
Diet
Feed quality small flakes or granules with varied frozen or live Artemia, Daphnia and bloodworm.
Care notes
Single fish can become nippy; a properly sized group makes them more settled and displays more natural behaviour.
