Overview
An attractively patterned South American bristlenose from the Rio Itenez/Guaporé region, commonly associated with the L519 trade form. Adults are around 10–11cm; the locality name does not establish a formally described species.
Scientific name: Ancistrus sp. 'Rio Itenez'
Behaviour
Usually quiet towards other fish, but adult males defend caves. One specimen is a sensible starting choice; give each additional adult its own shelter.
Tank Size
Our recommended minimum is 80 litres with an 80 × 30cm base for one adult. Use 120 litres or more with a broader footprint for a pair or community.
These are adult housing recommendations; choose more space when adding tank mates. Allow for space occupied by substrate and décor when comparing aquarium capacities.
Compatibility
Good with peaceful fish sharing the same water requirements. Avoid aggressive bottom dwellers competing for caves; do not crowd several males into a small tank.
Diet
Offer a balanced sinking pleco food with vegetable ingredients, blanched courgette and occasional suitable protein food. Do not assume aquarium algae supplies a complete diet.
Care
- Temperature: 23–28°C
- pH: 5.5–7.5
- General hardness: 3–12 dGH
Provide driftwood, stable caves and oxygenated filtered water. Feed near its shelter after lights dim if it is shy. Remove vegetable leftovers before they deteriorate and siphon waste around caves.
Add only to a fully cycled aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0mg/l. Start with a 25–30% weekly water change using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and adjust to test results and stocking. Rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under the tap.
