Match the plant to the wall’s aspect, available rooting space and eventual height. Clematis offers varied flowers and pruning needs; star jasmine provides fragrant flowers in a suitably sheltered position, while climbing hydrangea offers an option for appropriate shadier walls. Ivy and Virginia creeper can cover substantial areas and need careful placement and control. Some plants cling to surfaces, while others need wires, trellis or tying in. Check the condition of the structure and the plant’s support requirements before planting, and allow for soil that may be dry beside walls.
Observe sun, shade and shelter before choosing a plant. Warm walls and shady fences suit different climbers.
Check mature height and spread and provide the right wires or trellis before growth becomes heavy.
Clematis groups and other climbers need different pruning. Water well while new roots establish.
