Colombian Shark Catfish (Ariopsis seemanni) is a specialist brackish fish with care requirements that must be planned around adult size and behaviour.

Overview

• Scientific identity: Ariopsis seemanni
• Type: Brackish Fish
• Temperament: Large active group fish; specialist brackish tank mates only

Aquarium and water conditions

• Setup: Large, well-oxygenated brackish aquarium for adults; plan for increasing salinity as fish mature
• Water: Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, and match temperature, pH, salinity and hardness to the individual species
• Tank size: Allow for full adult size, social needs, filtration and access to food

Behaviour and compatibility

Large active group fish; specialist brackish tank mates only. Choose tank mates only after checking adult size and water needs; provide secure hiding places where appropriate.

Diet

Marine or brackish carnivore foods and suitable sinking pellets. Feed measured portions and remove leftovers to protect water quality.

Care notes

Use an established filtered aquarium, acclimate carefully and maintain regular water testing and partial changes. This fish's adult brackish requirements make a standard freshwater community unsuitable.
