Sow direct outdoors in an open sunny position. Prepare the soil by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (1/2in) in drills 30cm (12in) apart. Make regular sowings for a constant supply of lettuces.
When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 30cm (12in) apart. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. Dry weather may cause lettuce plants to bolt (run to seed) so regular watering is essential. Harvest individual leaves when required or by pulling up the entire plant before trimming off the stem with a knife. During warmer months, cutting can commence after about 70 days from sowing.
